Indulge in the flavors of Italy with this delicious Toasted Tuscan Sausage Sandwich. Perfectly seasoned Italian sausages are paired with sautéed peppers and onions, topped with melty cheese, and a hint of balsamic glaze, all nestled in a crusty sandwich roll. A satisfying meal that’s easy to make!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Sandwich:

  • 4 Italian sausages (mild or spicy)
  • 4 crusty sandwich rolls or ciabatta buns
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Sautéed Peppers and Onions:

  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Additional Toppings:

  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze (optional)
  • Fresh arugula or spinach (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Sauté Peppers and Onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet, add peppers, onions, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Cook until softened.
  3. Cook Sausages: Grill or pan-sear sausages until cooked through, then slice in half lengthwise.
  4. Toast Rolls: Slice rolls, toast lightly in the oven.
  5. Assemble Sandwiches: Layer rolls with sausages, sautéed peppers and onions, cheese, and balsamic glaze. Toast until cheese melts.
  6. Serve: Top with arugula or spinach if desired.

Notes

  • You can swap sausage for grilled chicken or portobello mushrooms for a lighter or vegetarian version.
  • Add pesto or sun-dried tomato spread for extra flavor.
