  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Red or pink food coloring
  • Sprinkles or sanding sugar for edges (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add Egg and Vanilla: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Mix Dough: Add the flour and salt, mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Color Dough: Divide the dough in half. Tint one portion with food coloring.
  5. Shape Dough: Shape colored dough into a log and refrigerate. Repeat with uncolored dough.
  6. Assemble Cookies: Slice and cut out heart shapes from both logs. Stack the hearts, wrap, and chill.
  7. Bake: Slice into cookies, roll edges in sprinkles if desired, and bake at 350°F for 10–12 minutes.
  8. Cool: Cool on a wire rack.
