Description

This gluten-free stuffing recipe is a perfect savory side dish for your holiday table or any special occasion. Made with hearty gluten-free bread cubes, fresh herbs, and a flavorful blend of sautéed vegetables, it’s moist, fragrant, and easy to prepare. With a crisp golden top and a tender interior, this stuffing offers delicious comfort while being suitable for those following a gluten-free or vegetarian diet (when using vegetable broth).

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 8 cups gluten-free bread cubes (from a crusty loaf, dried or lightly toasted)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten

Instructions

  1. Prepare Bread Cubes: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. If your gluten-free bread isn’t already dried, spread the cubes evenly on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 10–15 minutes until firm but not browned excessively.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and celery and sauté for 5–7 minutes until they soften and become translucent. Stir in minced garlic, chopped sage, thyme leaves, salt, and pepper, then cook everything together for another minute to release the herbs’ aroma.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Transfer the toasted bread cubes into a large mixing bowl. Pour the sautéed vegetable and herb mixture over the bread cubes and gently fold to combine evenly.
  4. Mix Liquid Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the low-sodium broth and lightly beaten eggs until smooth. Pour this liquid mixture over the bread and vegetables, gently tossing to ensure all the bread cubes absorb the moisture.
  5. Assemble and Bake: Spread the stuffing mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish and cover it tightly with foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Then remove the foil and continue baking for another 15–20 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown and crisp.

Notes

  • Use a hearty gluten-free bread loaf for the best texture; avoid soft sandwich-style breads as they may become mushy.
  • This stuffing can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated; simply bake it covered the day of serving.
  • For a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
  • If desired, add chopped nuts or dried fruit for added texture and flavor.
