Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Slowly add warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead and Rest: Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 2 to 3 minutes until smooth. Cover and let it rest for 20 minutes.
- Shape and Fry: Roll the dough into a 1/4-inch-thick rectangle. Cut into 3-inch squares or triangles. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet to 375°F. Fry sopapillas until golden brown and puffed, about 1 to 2 minutes per side.
- Serve: Drain on paper towels. Serve warm with honey drizzled over the top and a dusting of powdered sugar if desired.
