Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients:
- 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornmeal
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
Wet Ingredients:
- 2/3 cup whole milk
- 2 cups chopped white onion (about 1 medium onion)
- Kosher salt and black pepper to taste
- Oil for frying (e.g., vegetable or canola oil)
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.
- Add Onions: Stir in the chopped onion until evenly coated.
- Fry: Heat about ½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat (about 375 °F). Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, gently flattening each fritter. Fry 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
- Drain and Serve: Transfer fritters to paper towels to drain. Serve warm on their own or with a creamy dip.
Notes
- You can add garlic powder, paprika, or cayenne for extra flavor.
- For a lighter version, bake fritters on a greased sheet at 400 °F for 15–20 minutes, flipping once.
- Reheat in a low oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
- Leftovers freeze well in a single layer—reheat in a 375 °F oven for 15–20 minutes for the best texture.
