Description

Indulge in this decadent Chocolate Trifle recipe that features layers of moist chocolate cake, creamy chocolate pudding, whipped topping, and a sprinkle of chocolate chips. A delightful dessert that’s perfect for any occasion!

Ingredients

For the Chocolate Cake:

1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients to prepare)

For the Chocolate Pudding Layer:

1 package (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix, 2 cups cold milk

For the Topping:

1 container (8 oz) whipped topping (thawed), 1 cup crushed chocolate sandwich cookies or chocolate shavings, 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips or chopped chocolate, optional fresh berries or mint leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chocolate Cake: Prepare the chocolate cake according to the package directions and let it cool completely. Once cooled, cut the cake into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Make the Chocolate Pudding Layer: In a large bowl, whisk together the chocolate pudding mix and cold milk for 2 minutes, then let it sit for 5 minutes to thicken.
  3. Assemble the Trifle: In a trifle dish or large glass bowl, layer half of the chocolate cake cubes on the bottom. Spoon half of the chocolate pudding over the cake, spreading evenly. Add a layer of half the whipped topping, followed by a sprinkle of crushed cookies and mini chocolate chips. Repeat the layers with the remaining cake, pudding, whipped topping, and toppings.
  4. Chill and Serve: Chill for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the layers to set. Garnish with fresh berries or mint leaves if desired.

Notes

  • For extra richness, use brownies instead of cake.
  • You can also spike the pudding with a splash of coffee liqueur for an adult version.
  • Trifles are best made a few hours in advance to let the flavors meld.
